Q1: Why do I need a home charge point for my electric vehicle?
Charging an electric vehicle with a home charge point is safer and quicker than using a standard 13A plug. Our 3.7kW charge point will fully charge an EV with a 24kWh battery in around 7 hours, rather than 12-15 hours with a regular 13A socket.
Q2: Why can’t I use a 13A plug?
Using a standard 13A socket to charge electric vehicles is very slow and may put a strain on your home electricity supply.
Q3: How much could it cost to charge my vehicle?
As an example, if you paid 13p per kWh, a 24kW electric vehicle with an empty battery would cost a total of 24 x 13p = £3.12 to fully charge.

Q5: Which cars will be able to use our charge point?
Car manufacturers currently produce two types of outlet and connector: a Type 1 socket is common for Japanese and American vehicles and a Type 2 socket is common for European vehicles. The ENGIE charge points are available with both Type 1 and Type 2 tethered charging cables. You can choose the type when you complete the application form; please refer to your car manufacturer to identify which type you require.
Q6: Does the charge point come with a charging cable?
Yes, there is a tethered charging cable with the ENGIE charge point.
Q7: How do I operate the ENGIE EV charge point?
All ENGIE charge points have an innovative LED circle. With this system you have an intelligent status indicator that helps you understand what is happening with your charging station at any point in time.
Using your ENGIE charge point is easy:
- Connect the charge point cable to your car
- Your vehicle starts charging when the LED ring turns blue
- To stop charging, stop the charging session from your vehicle if applicable, and unplug the charging cable from your vehicle
Q8: How do I pay for the electricity my charge point uses?
The electricity you use during your electric vehicle charging will be added to your existing electricity supplier bill.
OLEV grant for charge points
Q9: What is the OLEV Grant?
OLEV, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, is a government department that provides grants to reduce the cost of your charge point.
Q10: What is the eligibility criteria for the OLEV Grant?
To be eligible for the grant, you need to meet a number of criteria, including;
- You have dedicated off-street parking
- You obtained keepership of an OLEV eligible electric vehicle after 1st of April 2015
- You have not already claimed the grant
- By claiming the grant, you are not exceeding the limit of two OLEV funded chargepoints per household

Q11: How do I apply for the OLEV grant?
You will be required to complete, print off and sign the OLEV Homecharge Scheme Installation Form Part A available here and send this form and any proof of eligibility to ENGIE with your application. ENGIE is an approved supplier under the government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme and will manage the grant application on your behalf. We will collect the grant from the government and you will just be required to pay the net charge point fee.
Q12: Can I still apply for a charge point if I’m not eligible for the OLEV Grant?
Yes, however you will also be required to pay a £500 fee, in addition to the standard fee, to cover the cost of the grant.
Installation of the ENGIE EV charge point
Q13: Where can I have the charge point installed?
The ENGIE EV charge point can only be attached to a wall of the main residential property. You must have private off street parking and your property must be a UK mainland residential address where you either own the property or have consent from the landlord for a charge point to be installed.
Q14: What is included in your installation?
Our standard installation includes:
- The maximum run of cable is 10 metres from consumer unit (fuse box) to the charge point location
- The property's consumer unit (fuse box) must have a spare fuse point for the outgoing charge point circuit
- The cable to the charge point will be neatly surface mounted
- There are no associated ground works, for example trenches that required digging to lay cables
- The property must have earthing compliance with current regulations and the charge point must be able to utilise the property's earthing arrangement
- The charge point must be fixed to the wall of the property
Q15: How long will it take to book and install the ENGIE charge point?
Once we receive your order, one of our representatives will call within 2 working days of completing your application to validate it, including:
- Reviewing your electric vehicle eligibility information
- Discussing your home installation requirements
Once these items have been validated, the installation can typically take place 14 days later, or 21 days later if you are also transferring your energy supply to the EV Home tariff, subject to your availability. You can choose from available time slots; a morning slot 8am to 12pm or an afternoon slot 12pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
Q16: Are there any other limitations for the installation?
Your existing electrical fittings and consumer board should be sufficient for charge points. We won’t include any ground works, for example digging a trench for the cable.
If any additional work or hardware is required, then we can provide you with a quote for completion of the additional work.
Q17: Can the installation always be completed on the day?
Installations typically take 2-3 hours to complete. However, when the installer visits your premises they may find that additional electrical or other work is required. This could include replacing old fuse boxes and wiring, or extra work to place the charge point in your preferred location. If this is the case we won’t be able to install on the planned date for installation. Our installer will leave your property and where possible, ENGIE will provide a quote for this additional work, or you can source an alternative provider. If ENGIE are to conduct the additional work, we will need to arrange a further installation date from 14 calendar days after the issue of the quote.
Q18: If I move premises, can I take the charge point with me?
You can apply for a new charge point in the new property and claim the OLEV grant again, provided the vehicle registration details have been updated to the new property. Alternatively, you can contact ENGIE for a quote to move your ENGIE EV charge point.
Charge point servicing
Q18: What happens if my charge point is not working?
Your charge point includes a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty. If you need help, contact ENGIE initially, as many problems can be fixed remotely. If we can’t fix the problem, we will arrange for a specialist to visit your property to resolve the issue. You can call us on 0800 280 8000 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (excluding public holidays).
Please be aware that if you try to fix the charge point yourself or engage a third party to fix any problems, you may invalidate your warranty.
